danah boyd has written on the effect public displays of connections - your Friends on social networks - can have on a person's identity. Mainly, they help keep that person's profile honest.
I always tell my students of how careful they need to be with their profiles and associations while in Facebook, or any other online social network they belong to - in particular because of employers.
Now both points meet as employers are mining the individual's "friends" for references. Yet another reason for people to be more careful when selecting/confirming friends for their profiles, and even more control those privacy settings.
